Sang-yeop Lee Develops Protein Analysis Technology

Biochemistry professor Sang-yeop Lee has developed a new technology for analyzing protein bodies that uses heat-shock proteins to retard the decomposition of other proteins. "Protein bodies" refers to all the protein in a cell or tissue. Protein research is presently impeded by the tendency of protein bodies to decompose outside the cell. Prof. Lee's team has produced and purified heat-shock protein from the bacillus E. Coli and then showed that this protein efficiently retards protein body decomposition. With this new technology they can detect protein at levels 50% greater sensitivity than before. They have adapted their method to the detection of various proteins and confirmed its effect, thereby demonstrating that the technology has potentially wide application.
