Taking the natural gas energy content to be roughly 3.7 × 107 joules/m3, the world energy consumption in natural gas is

Energy/year = 3.7 × 107 joules/m3 × 3.198 × 1012 m3/year = 1.2 × 1020 joules/year

The conversion factor has a 10% uncertainty due to (1) varying composition of natural gas and (2) the sensitivity of the gas volume to temperature and pressure. The above conversion factor assumes

5.5 × 107 joules/kg × 0.67 kg/m3 = 3.69 × 107 joules/m3

Assuming a market price of $0.25/m3 ($7 per 1000 ft3), the cost per joule is

Cost/joule = [ $0.25/m3 ] / [ 3.69 × 107 joules/m3 ] = $6.8 × 10-9 joule-1
