Taking the coal energy content to be roughly 2.0 × 1010 joules/ton, the 2006 world energy consumption in coal was

Energy/year = 2.0 x 1010 joules/ton × 6.54 × 109 tons/year = 1.31 × 1020 joules/year

The conversion factor (EIA standard) has a 10% uncertainty due to the varying composition of coal. The above conversion factor assumes

2.2 × 107 joules/kg × 907 kg/ton = 2.0 × 1010 joules/ton

The "short" ton is the conventional ton (2,000 lbs) used in US weight measure. The metric ton, or tonne, is 1.1 tons = 1,000 kg. Assuming a market price of $50/ton in 2008 dollars, the cost per joule is

Cost/joule = [$50/ton] / [2.0 × 10 joules/ton] = $2.5 × 10-9 joule-1

This number can vary by factors of 2 due to long-term contract discounts and demand fluctuations.
