The Benjamin Franklin Medal is an given annually by the Franklin Institute in a several categories ranging from pure science to engineering and entrepreneurship. Prof. Laughlin shared the 1998 Franklin Medal with Dan Tsui and Horst Störmer for the same work that won them the Nobel Prize later that year.

The Franklin Medal is approximately 1.5 inches across.

The award ceremony took place at the Franklin Institute Auditorium in Philadelphia in April 1998. It was an impressive Hollywood-style production, complete with red carpets, trumpets and an engaging audience bejeweled with diamonds. A lovely reception and dinner followed.
