HS112: Science, Technology and Philosophy

This course is an introduction to major themes in the philosophy of science and technology. It focuses mainly on 20th century analytic philosophy of science and on philosophical issues in recent technology. It explores such issues as: How does science differ from other human enterprises? How are scientific claims confirmed or falsified? Is scientific change rational? What is the nature of scientific explanation? What are the implications of contemporary biology for the humanities? Do science and technology have gender? Is artificial intelligence possible?
