A senior figure at the Vatican has commented on controversy surrounding
disgraced cloning scientist Prof. Hwang Woo-suk¡¯s embryonic stem cell
research. Bishop Elio Sgreccia, the president of the Pontifical Academy
for Life in the Vatican, said Korean society ¡°went against ethics and
instead chose its own advancement.¡±
The cleric said this was as perilous as ¡°dashing down a slope
without brakes.¡± In an interview with the Catholic Times, Sgreccia
reiterated the church¡¯s support for adult stem cell research, saying,
¡°It is clear that there is a better way to carry out scientific
