The year 2005 has been a disaster for MBC, which managed to keep itself in the center of controversy all year long.
Its troubles included a flasher on a prime-time program, a deadly
accident in Sangju, and a ¡°PD Diary¡± expose of stem cell pioneer Hwang
Woo-suk that led to mass cancellation of advertising contracts. As a
result, the terrestrial broadcaster¡¯s advertising revenue has for the
first time fallen behind that of rival SBS. According to Korea Broadcasting Advertising Corp. (KOBACO),
SBS overtook MBC in TV advertising revenue, chalking up W46.6 billion
(US$46.6 million) in November compared with MBC¡¯s W43.3 billion. Experts say MBC is losing favor with advertisers due to the
scandals and low ratings for its programs, which rarely make it into
the top 20 most watched shows. (englishnews@chosun.com )
