National Conference Invitation

Conference features

A. Plenary

This year, HPAIR will be holding three plenary sessions that will focus on how the Philippines is addressing globalization. A panel of experts will discuss their perspectives on the specific topic and delegates are may ask questions after each panelist presents. This year, the conference will focus on language, culture, and education. The list of speakers and description of the sessions will be uploaded in the website by October 17, 2007.

Plenary 1: Language in the Global Arena

Long have the issues of a national language and a standardized language for instruction been the center of heated debates in the Philippines. While nationalists believe that Filipino should be used in schools and even formally in business and government, others say that the Filipinos’ grasp of English sets us apart and gives us an edge over other nations. Plenary 1 on “Language in the Global Arena” focuses on this issue. Here, we take a look at how other countries have dealt with English and their own languages by dissecting their legislation on language. The status and future implications and opportunities of the Philippines on this topic will also be discussed in this plenary.

Invited Speakers:
Jesli Lapuz, Secretary of the Department of Education
Gerard Chesnel, Ambassador of France

Plenary 2: Adjusting Filipino Culture

As the earth becomes one global nation, every country struggles to consolidate their culture with that of the rest of the world. Having been colonized for four centuries and being highly exposed to western influences at present, the Philippines is at the forefront of this struggle. For this reason, we bring to you a plenary on the “Adjusting Filipino Culture”. Various speakers from several fields representing different aspects of Filipino culture will talk about how they have adapted to globalization and to a world culture and how they have fused the local and international aspects of their fields. Focus will be on the arts, music and media.

Invited Speakers:
Nono Palmos, Designer
Danny Javier, OPM artist
Benilda Santos, writer and recently honored the Metrobank Outstanding Teacher Award

Plenary 3: Becoming World Class: Philippine Education

The Philippines’ primary and secondary educational system has been spiraling downwards this past decade as test scores as well as performance relative to other countries have been trending lower. Colleges, on the other hand, experience a different situation. Recent rankings and surveys have shown that they still remain competitive in the global arena. However, with the trend of students moving to other countries to seek tertiary education, Philippine colleges have failed to capture this market. Now, our colleges are keen on capitalizing on this opportunity. In this plenary, we discuss what this leap will entail and what efforts are currently being implemented, so that the Philippine education becomes “world class”.

Invited Speakers:
Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, President of the Ateneo de Manila University

B. Workshop

Workshops aim to provide more focused discussion on the subject of leadership. This year, there will be two workshops available: governance and business. The theme of both workshops will be similar; however, the content will depend on the panel of speakers that will be presenting in each room. The list of speakers for each workshop will be uploaded in the website by October 17, 2007. The description of each workshop session is provided below.

Workshop 1: Global Leadership

In this day and age, globalization has taken over and leaders not poised to ride this wave will surely be left behind by the world’s more adaptive individuals. Along with this trend, the definition of leadership is quickly being reinvented. Globalization brings quick change, which is why great leadership is now marked by innovation and vision as opposed to the more traditional sternness, repetitiveness and efficiency. In response to this, HPAIR brings you the Global Leadership workshop, an interactive experience that puts you in the shoes of global leaders to give participants an idea of what playing in the global arena entails.

Governance: Where inter-country relations is inevitable, government personalities and NGO officials give you a glimpse into the dealings between local government institutions and foreign and international organizations.

Invited Speakers:
Walden Bello, international activist and director of the Focus on the Global South

Business: Prominent business executives guide you on how one moves from the local corporate arena to the global business stage.

Workshop 2: Communications

Hand-in-hand with globalization is a rising need to open avenues of communication between institutions and individuals. No successful organization and no individual, in fact, can function in today’s society without the advanced knowledge and skill of communication. For this reason, HPAIR brings you the Communications workshop in this year’s National Conference to help you unlock your potential and usher you into the world of increased interactivity. Executive coaches will help you deal with some issues that surround you and Communications as well as clarify some notions and highlight points on the importance of such a skill.

Governance: Whether one works in an NGO or one is a government official, communication is essential. We teach you the importance of communication in relaying one’s platforms, reaching one’s audience and forging ties with those who matter.

Business: We help you find the skill to articulate one’s vision and command one’s team, which is of utmost importance to any business leader.

Workshop 3: Global Youth Leadership

As undergraduate students, hoping to one day make waves in the “real world”, putting one’s stamp on the world as early as now is quite significant. Rising competitiveness, brought in by a globalizing world, means that the struggle to excel has become increasingly more difficult than ever before. Consequently, HPAIR brings you the Global Youth Leadership workshop. Not to be confused with the first workshop, this workshop prepares you to assume the role of a leader as soon as you step out of college. It will familiarize you with territory you have never explored and guide you towards surmounting the obstacles that you may face.

Governance: For many, governance has been a life-long pursuit. Guests reveal the benefits of starting young and of rendering one’s service to the country.

Invited Speakers:
Dr. La Viña, Dean of the Ateneo School of Government
Boyet Dy

Business: Successful entrepreneurs have never been younger. Bringing them to you, the workshop presents first-hand experiences of such stories of triumph, which you can relate to.

Invited Speakers:
Mark Joaquin Ruiz, Head of the Microventures Inc. and Hapinoy (sari-sari store chain)
Jeffrey Tarayao, Head of the Community Relations Department of Globe Telecom
Illiac Diaz, entrepreneur and part of BioRock (project for the preservation of Philippine coral reefs)

C. Paper Presentation

HPAIR is proud to present the second installment of its paper presentation series. This feature aims to provide undergraduate students with the avenue to present their own research work. Usually, paper presentation is only available for graduate students and PhD candidates. HPAIR recognizes that undergraduates may also provide quality research material.
